MnDOT District 8 awarded highway safety improvement funding

WILLMAR, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation announces that District 8 in southwest Minnesota, has been awarded $2,686,000 from the Highway Safety Improvement Program for three safety improvement projects within the district. HSIP is a federal-aid funding program designed to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on public roads. The object of the program is to identify, implement and evaluate cost effective construction safety projects.

In District 8, the three projects which will receive HSIP funding include:

  • Highway 23 Marshall – a J-turn will be installed at Highway 23 and Tiger Drive in Marshall. J-turns are a driving movement proven to reduce serious and fatal crashes caused by “T-bone” crashes at intersections. The project received $1,980,000 in HSIP funding and is scheduled for implementation in 2028. For additional information, contact Jesse Vlaminck at 320-212-0206.
  • Districtwide – chevron signs, rumble strips, and lighting will be installed along curves on state highways throughout the district to enhance safety. The project received $396,000 in HSIP funding and is scheduled for implementation in 2027. For additional information, contact Patrick Thompson at 320-905-9033.
  • Highway 212 and Highway 15 Brownton – a roundabout will be installed at Highway 212 and Highway 15 in Brownton. Roundabouts are a driving movement that slows vehicle speeds and lowers the risk of serious and fatal crashes. The project received $310,000 in HSIP funding and is scheduled for construction in 2026. For additional information, contact Jesse Vlaminck at 320-212-0206 or visit the project website at mndot.gov/d8/hwy212brownton.
